The top 5 albums of 2013

Many bands, old and new, have released new albums this year to try and claim that top spot of the best band of 2013. Only a few managed to succeed in gaining anywhere near. So I’ve decided to give you my top 5 albums from bands who I think exceeded expectations this year.

5- Black Veil Brides – Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones

With the release of their new album ‘Wretched and Divive: The Story of The Wild Ones’ back in January and managing to headline the Kerrang! Tour and have sold-out worldwide tour, its seems the band has managed to gain some form of respect in the music world. Though they still are many people’s favourite band to hate, it feels like the band have managed to sway some of those opinions of them with their new album. The band also put together a 45 minute long movie of the album which they aired in late December 2012. This year 4 songs have been released of the album, including the insanely catchy ‘In The End’; the song later received a Golden Gods award for Best Song of the Year. The band have also gone on to win various other awards for their music including, Kerrang’s! Best Live Band. It seems safe to say that the band aren’t going anywhere any time soon.

4- Five Finger Death Punch – The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell

This year the band released a 2 part album called “The Wrong Side of Heaven and The Righteous Side of Hell”. The first was released July 30th 2013 and immediately became and iconic album for the year. With their slot at Download 2013 secured they played the best songs off the album, including the first single off the track “Lift me up” featuring Rob Halford from Judas Priest. The first part of the album made number 1 in the US hard rock and Rock chart and 21 in the UK albums chart. The band released the second part to the album on November 19th 2013, but the success was not as high as the first with it only reaching 17 in the Austria. The band also supported Avenged Sevenfold in late November on their UK tour, reminding audiences of their amazing stage presence and performances.

3- Asking Alexandria – From Death to Destiny

With Danny’s successful recovery from addiction, the band released a new album ‘From Death to Destiny’ on August 6th 2013. The album represents Danny’s struggle and the hard times he went through before rehab. Each of the women in the vending machines represents one of Danny’s addictions and since the album has been released they have performed with them on stage. It has been said that at one of the concerts before the release of the albums, lead guitarist and founder of the band, Ben Bruce asked fans to vote for Danny to go to rehab, to prove to him that the music should mean more. The album reached number 5 on America’s billboard top 200, giving them their greatest success to date. The band also reached number 1 on the UK Rock and Metal chart, proving that the support of the fans back in the UK hasn’t been lost at all. The band have spoken in interview about the album, Ben Bruce said “It’s taken long enough! It wasn’t because we were being lazy, but because we wanted it to be perfect. ‘From Death To Destiny is our third album and we wanted to make sure we’d bring out the best possible record we could.” The band have released 5 singles from the album including a ‘rock mix’ of the song ‘The Death of Me’.

2- Fall Out Boy – Save Rock and Roll

After 4 years of being on hiatus, Fall Out Boy came and reminded us why they were once the world’s best pop punk band. ‘Save Rock and Roll’ features the classic sounds of FOB but also new interesting sounds that the fans are loving. The first single, ‘My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark’ went straight to number 2 on iTunes after only a few hours of it being released. It was almost like the world had been waiting patiently for that moment to happen. The single itself sold 2 million copies in the US and peaked at number 5 in UK Top 40 chart. The album itself reached 1 on all of the US charts and gained a Silver certification in the UK for selling over 60,000 copies. The album was well worth the wait. Since it release, all of the singles taken from the album have gone on to be successful and win back the fans they thought they had lost many years ago from their hiatus.

1- Bring Me The Horizon – Sempiternal

I think it is safe to say that Bring Me The Horizon had the most successful year of all bands. The album was released April 1st 2013 and instantly became a sensation among the rock fans. It was the album everyone was talking about. The first single ‘Shadow Moses’ had everyone eager to hear the rest of the album as it was released back in January. BMTH knew exactly what they were doing making the fans wait over 3 months to hear the rest of the album. However, as days went on the album began to get leaked onto Youtube and other websites. Though this didn’t stop the success of the album at all. The album reached number 1 in the UK rock chart and record store chart but only 3 in the UK album chart. This was BMTH big break. The reason they are the most successful band of 2013 is because of the fan base they brought in with the new music they had produced. Even though Jonas Weinhofen left the band at the start of the year before album release, the band didn’t seem to mind and continued to make the album with new member Jordan Fish. The album as a whole brought a new side of BMTH out, especially to the older fans who are used to the much much heavier version of them. Though it is safe to say that all are impressed by this album and that Bring Me The Horizon are only to become an even bigger band in 2014 than they already were.

So that’s my top 5 albums of 2013 and why I think they were so successful. Your opinions may not be the same as mine so if you think differently or wanna tell me your own top 5 albums of 2013, comment below and discuss them with me.
